The signs of hearing loss

29th January 2014 by The Lyric Team

Hearing loss affects over 10 million people in the UK – that’s 1 in 6 of the population! Surveys have shown that only 40% of people with a hearing loss actually wear a hearing aid*

What are the signs that I have a problem with my hearing?

People can sound as though they are mumbling and not speaking clearly enough.

You may find yourself asking people to repeat themselves or to speak more slowly.

You may need to turn up or constantly change the volume on the TV/radio.  Some programmes may be easier to hear than others – like the news, but other s can be more challenging.

Certain words can be hard to catch – this may be more noticeable if you are somewhere noisy or if there are a few people talking at once.

Do any of these things sound familiar?

Sometimes people can find that they start to take a step back from situations where it can be more difficult to hear because it “too much like hard work”  It can become tiring having to listen more carefully.

Unfortunately those places are usually the most fun!  Family occasions, going out for dinner, having a good catch up with your friends.

Our hearing affects almost every second of our waking lives and is unfortunately something we take for granted until its not working quite as well as we would like.

If you are reading this, the likelihood is that you or someone you care about his struggling with their hearing.

What should you do?

Speak to an audiologist and have a hearing assessment.  It may be that thankfully your hearing is fine, but if there is some hearing loss, there are so many options available to help improve your quality of life.

Your hearing professional can discuss options that would improve your quality of life  – technology really does change very quickly in the world of hearing aids and it's definitely worth checking to see what’s out there, even if you only did this a few years ago and didnt like what you saw!

Phonak Lyric is unique because not only will no one be able to see that you are wearing hearing aids, but you don’t have to spend time looking after them!

I have heard lots of people who wear Phonak Lyric say that they don’t feel like a hearing aid user – and they don’t feel like they have a hearing loss any more either.
